Frequently Asked Questions
How Does Van Leasing Work?
Am I Eligible For Van Leasing?
Is It Cheaper To Lease Rather Than Buy A Van?
Is VAT Reclaimable On A Leased Van, And How Does This Affect My Monthly Payments?
What Documents Are Required To Lease A Van?
To lease your van, you will need to bring along your driver’s license, proof of your address and financial information, including your bank details and details about your income and employment.
You’ll also be required to provide personal details such as your name, date of birth, and address history, as well as a successful credit check.
Do I Need Any Special Permits To Operate A Leased Van In Scottish City Centres Such As Edinburgh Or Glasgow?
You do not need a special permit to operate a leased van in Scottish city centres, provided that your vehicle complies with emission standards.
If you are parking in a controlled zone in Edinburgh or Glasgow, a van will need a standard business parking permit from the local council, which can be tied to the leased registration.
What Are Scotland's Low Emission Zones And Which Vans Are Compliant?
There are four Low Emission Zones in Scotland, located in the city centres of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. These LEZs operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including public holidays and Christmas Day.
The specific Euro emission standard that must be met in order to drive in a Low Emission Zone in Scotland is:
- Euro 4 for petrol cars and vans,
- Euro 6 for diesel cars and vans.
You can check whether your vehicle is compliant using the mygov.scot vehicle checker.
If you drive a non-compliant vehicle into the Low Emission Zone and fail to pay the charge, you will be issued a penalty charge. The first penalty charge is £60, reduced to £30 if you pay within 14 days. The charge is then doubled if you drive the same vehicle into the same LEZ within 90 days. The maximum penalty for cars and light goods vehicles is £480. If there are 90 days following your last penalty charge, the amount is reset to £60.
Which areas of Glasgow does the Low Emission Zone cover?
The Glasgow Low Emission Zone covers the city centre, broadly bounded by the M8 motorway to the north and west. If your business regularly operates in areas such as Merchant City, Buchanan Street, or the Trongate, your van must be compliant.
Which areas of Edinburgh does the Low Emission Zone cover?
The Edinburgh Low Emission Zone covers a 1.2-square-mile area within the city centre. Bordered by Queen Street to the north, Abbeyhill/Holyrood Road to the East, the Pleasance/Melville Drive to the south, and Tollcross/Palmerston Place to the west.
The boundary itself is not within the Low Emission Zone.
What Payload Capacity Do I Need and How Do I Calculate It?
Payload capacity is the maximum weight a vehicle can safely carry, including passengers, cargo and equipment. This is calculated by subtracting the kerb weight from the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, typically found on the driver-side door sticker.
It is unsafe to exceed this limit, as certain parts of the vehicle, such as the brakes and shock absorbers, are not designed to handle such loads.
Overloading a van can also have legal consequences. Should an officer pull you over and deem your vehicle overloaded, you could receive a £300 fine and up to 3 penalty points. Should the overloaded vehicle present a safety threat to you and/or other road users, you could face a fine of up to £5,000.
Many rural roads across Scotland have weight-restricted bridges, so knowing your vehicle’s payload capacity is important.
I'm A Builder/Plumber/Electrician In Scotland — What Van Lease Would Suit Me Best
For builders, plumbers and electricians, high-payload-capacity vans are an excellent choice for building materials, with easy manoeuvrability for projects in the city. The Ford Transit Custom, VW Caddy and Vauxhall Vivaro are all popular vans amongst builders, electricians and plumbers alike.
What Contract Lengths Are Available, and Which Is Best For My Business?
We offer various contract lengths, including 24, 36 and 48-month terms, up to 5 years, to help businesses find the flexibility they require and monthly payments that suit their budgets. You can tailor your lease contract to suit your business’s needs and personal circumstances. Plus, our team can discuss your business and find the right contract length.
Are There Any Mileage Limits On Leased Vans?
Most lease agreements will specify an annual mileage limit. Should you exceed this limit, you will be charged at the end of the lease.
Can I Lease A Van With A Maintenance Package?
How Long Does A Van Leasing Contract Last?
Will My Lease Contract Have A Mileage Limit?
Who Is Responsible For Van Repairs And Upkeep?
The manufacturer’s warranty will cover the cost of repairs resulting from faults which develop during the warranty period and are covered under the terms of the warranty.
You will also have the option to arrange a maintenance and service package alongside your van lease contract, reflected in your monthly payments.
Without a maintenance package, you will be responsible for general wear and tear, including tyres, brakes and servicing.
What Does My Monthly Lease Payment Actually Include?
A monthly lease payment typically covers vehicle use and road tax for the duration of the contract. It does not usually include insurance, fuel, maintenance (unless opting for a maintenance package), or excess mileage charges.
How Many Vans Can I Lease At Once — Is Fleet Leasing An Option For Scottish Businesses?
Yes, fleet leasing is possible if your business requires multiple vans. For example, plumbing firms, courier companies and construction businesses can all benefit from fleet leasing. There are several financial benefits to fleet leasing, including lower initial costs compared to purchasing a vehicle outright. This is an excellent way to preserve your cash flow, and the fixed monthly payments can simplify budgeting with predictable monthly costs over the lease term.
Can I Sign-Write The Van?
Company decals and liveries can be applied to vehicles under a finance lease and hire purchase, as you will own the van at the end of the lease period.
If you apply decals to a van under a contract hire lease, you must ensure that decals are removed at the end of the lease. Failure to remove these decals will result in a charge.
