Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you provide van leasing in Wales?
What types of vans are available for lease in Wales?
Can I lease a van if I’m self-employed?
Can new start-ups or small businesses in Wales qualify for van leasing?
What documents do I need to provide to lease a van?
To lease a van, you’ll need to provide a valid driver’s licence, proof of address and financial information. This can include bank details and details about your income and employment history.
You will also need to provide personal information such as your name, date of birth, and address history, and pass a credit check.
What is the difference between Contract Hire and Finance Lease?
Business contract hire and finance lease are two of the most common van leasing types.
Under business contract hire, the finance company retains ownership of the vehicle and will be the registered keeper. Then, at the end of the period, you hand the van back. Your mileage will likely be limited, with excess mileage and damage charges payable at the end of the contract.
A finance lease is a long-term rental agreement. This allows you to use the van for a fixed period of time and mileage, whilst making regular payments. At the end of the contract, you pay a final balloon payment. You/ your business will assume the risks and rewards of vehicle depreciation, and you’ll be responsible for selling the vehicle at the end of the contract.
How long are typical van leasing contracts?
What happens if I exceed my agreed mileage limit?
If you exceed your agreed mileage limit, you will receive mileage charges. This is why it is important to agree on a realistic mileage limit.
You can request an extension during your contract period, which will change your total mileage limit and spread the extra miles over your term, but this will usually lead to a higher monthly payment.
You can also decrease your mileage where needed, but you won’t get any unused miles back and may be charged a small administration fee.
Can I lease multiple vans at once for my growing business fleet?
Can I lease a van with a maintenance package?
How does VAT reclaim work on a commercial van lease in Wales?
What happens if my business situation changes and I need to end my lease early?
If you need to end your lease early, you must contact your finance company directly to request a formal early termination quote; they will calculate a settlement amount. If you accept the fee, you must schedule an inspection and vehicle collection.
You may also owe money if you exceed your agreed mileage limit or if the van has damage that exceeds standard fair wear and tear.
Here at Universal Vans, we are the broker, so we arrange the finance and the van. Once your agreement is live, you will deal with the finance company directly. They can answer any questions you have on the early lease termination process.
Are insurance costs included in the monthly lease price?
Can I signwrite or wrap my leased van with company branding?
You can apply signwriting and company decals to vehicles under a finance lease and hire purchase finance. This is because you will own the van at the end of the lease period.
If your van is under a contract hire lease, you can signwrite the vehicle; however, you must remove the decals before returning it. Failure to do so will result in an additional charge.
Can I fit towbars, roof racks, or internal shelving to my leased van?
Are there any Clean Air Zones (CAZ) or LEZs in Wales that I need to consider?
Wales does not currently have daily charge-based Clean Air Zones like London’s ULEZ and Bristol’s CAZ. Major cities like Cardiff and Bristol (just across the Severn Bridges) have active clean air and low-emission monitoring schemes.
If your business regularly crosses the border into England or delivers into city centres, choosing a Euro 6 Compliant diesel or a Euro 4 Compliant petrol means you won’t have to factor in these driving charges.
What happens at the end of my lease term?
At the end of your lease, you’ll return your van directly to us. Our team will inspect the van and sign it off. Any issues will incur a penalty, including removing signage or damage to the van.
Damage is deterioration from a specific event, neglect, or misuse.
Can I extend my van lease when the contract ends?
No, you cannot renew the same lease. However, you can upgrade, much like you would with your mobile phone.
Choose from the van models we have available and contact our team to discuss your new lease and updated van. The process is simple.
What are the benefits of leasing?
Why is leasing better for cash flow than buying a van outright?
Buying outright ties up valuable working capital in a depreciating asset.
Van leasing requires a much lower initial outlay and turns your vehicle costs into predictable monthly operational expenses, freeing up your capital to invest in business growth, stock, or equipment.
